The Captain's Hat
This book is a unique project that began as a commission by Glenwood State Bank as part of their 100 year anniversary celebration. This full-color picture book is set in Glenwood, 1907 and follows young Otto Arneson as he sets out to earn enough money to buy a captian's hat to prove he's "big enough" to sail with his father in the 4th of July sailboat race on Lake Minnewaska.
The Captain's Hat is a work of historical fiction. While Otto, his family and the little girl in the story are all fictional characters, the details of Otto's life and surroundings are as historically accurate as possible. For example, Glenwood State Bank opened in May, 1907. In The Captain's Hat, Mr. Aune, the bank's first president, helps Otto open a savings account. Other people, businesses, and events mentioned throughout the story were taken from historical records detailing life in Glenwood, Minnesota, 1907 -- including the Fourth of July race on Lake Minnewaska in which Otto so desperately wants to sail.
The hardcover edition of The Captain's Hat was published Dec., 2007 and presented first to Glenwood State Bank customers. The DVD and softcover editions followed in 2008.
